passwd - the password file
  1.
  2. PASSWD(5)                File Formats and Conversions                PASSWD(5)
  3.
  4. NAME
  5.        passwd - the password file
  6.
  7. DESCRIPTION
  8.        /etc/passwd contains one line for each user account, with seven fields
  9.        delimited by colons (“:”). These fields are:
  10.
  11.        •   login name
  12.
  13.        •   optional encrypted password
  14.
  15.        •   numerical user ID
  16.
  17.        •   numerical group ID
  18.
  19.        •   user name or comment field
  20.
  21.        •   user home directory
  22.
  23.        •   optional user command interpreter
  24.
  25.        The encrypted password field may be blank, in which case no password is
  26.        required to authenticate as the specified login name. However, some
  27.        applications which read the /etc/passwd file may decide not to permit
  28.        any access at all if the password field is blank. If the password field
  29.        is a lower-case “x”, then the encrypted password is actually stored in
  30.        the shadow(5) file instead; there must be a corresponding line in the
  31.        /etc/shadow file, or else the user account is invalid. If the password
  32.        field is any other string, then it will be treated as an encrypted
  33.        password, as specified by crypt(3).
  34.
  35.        The comment field is used by various system utilities, such as
  36.        finger(1).
  37.
  38.        The home directory field provides the name of the initial working
  39.        directory. The login program uses this information to set the value of
  40.        the $HOME environmental variable.
  41.
  42.        The command interpreter field provides the name of the user's command
  43.        language interpreter, or the name of the initial program to execute.
  44.        The login program uses this information to set the value of the $SHELL
  45.        environmental variable. If this field is empty, it defaults to the
  46.        value /bin/sh.
